Alpe di Siusi is an alpine meadow nestled in the Dolomites. In the summer, it offers activities like hiking, cycling, and rock climbing, while winter brings skiing opportunities. It is truly a family-friendly leisure resort for locals.
We chose this as our very first hiking route at Dolomites, mainly because of its convenient transportation and low difficulty. We wanted to start our journey at a leisurely pace while taking in the stunning Alpine scenery. However, as we hiked for the entire day and hadn’t anticipated the relentless sun, we still wrapped up the day with near-dehydrated bodies and blistered toes.
Hiking Route
There are numerous hiking trails and cable car combo tickets to choose from. We decided on the following route and only purchased a round-trip ticket for Cable Car No. 11:
1. 10:30 – Take Cable Car No. 11 from ‘📍 Seilbahnen St.Ulrich – Seiser Alm’
2. Arrive at ‘Telecabina Ortisei – Alpe di Siusi, upper station’
3. Hike to ‘📍 Compatsch’
4. Hike to ‘📍 Saltria’, then retrace our steps back. 17:40 – Return to 2. the mountain station, and take Cable Car No. 11 back to 1. the valley station in Ortisei.
Looking back, since the route and scenery don’t change much, if you’re short on time, you can just hike to Compatsch and head back to Ortisei. That would leave you with the perfect amount of time to visit Seceda in the afternoon.

Important Tips
❗️ Minimal shade along the way. Physical sun protection (hats, long sleeves) and plenty of water are absolute must-haves in the summer.
❗️ No steep inclines, but lots of fine gravel sections. It is highly recommended to wear at least basic hiking boots.
❗️ Plenty of mountain huts (Rifugios) available. It’s a good idea to check dining and restroom spots in advance.

Starting our hike from the mountain station. At this point, we still thought the clear, cloudless weather was incredibly pleasant.

The main scenery of the plateau: rocky mountains, rolling green hills, and coniferous forests weaving through them.

Packed our favorite sandwiches loaded with prosciutto and cheese beforehand, so we didn’t look for a mountain hut for lunch.

(The sandwich features two types of supermarket-bought prosciutto and cheese!)

Guessing this is looking towards the Sassolungo group.

It had been so long since last soaked up the sun, I was exceptionally happy!

It was only later, when I noticed a mild sunburn and finally put on sun protection, that I realized it was too late.

Right when our drinking water ran out, we found a restaurant with a spectacular view to restock
📍Rauchhütte

People here don’t seem to drink very cold beverages no matter how hot it gets. The fizzy apple juice was somewhat chilled, but the regular apple juice was room temperature. I couldn’t help but ask the waiter for a cup of ice.

Power-walking at top speed from Saltria back to the mountain station. During the 1-hour-and-40-minute trek, it was so hot that I have no desire to take photos.
