I started getting interested in whisking my own matcha late last year. It began with buying matcha powder in Japan and borrowing a cheap chasen (whisk) and chawan (bowl) from my sister to experiment with. Once I confirmed that I truly loved making it, I set my sights on this “YUGEN MATCHA BREWING KIT" and finally managed to snag one when it was restocked on their official website at the end of January!
YUGEN is a tea merchant based in Kyoto that sells Uji-grown tea leaves, matcha powder, and various tea tools, all of which have a solid reputation. The chasen included in the kit is highly regarded; it’s crafted by artisans in Takayama, Nara. Since there are very few masters left who possess this traditional skill, the production is quite limited. It took about two months from the time I first started following them until I finally got my hands on one.
The kit I purchased includes a katakuchi (spouted) matcha bowl, a white bamboo chasen, a white bamboo chashaku (scoop), and a 50g tin of their #1 matcha powder. I also bought an extra chasen stand. Not only was the packaging exquisite, but it also came with a personalized thank-you note with my name on it.
I haven’t studied the tea ceremony myself, so far, my only experience has been whisking thick matcha for lattes. However, these new tools feel significantly smoother to use than the random ones I previously bought, and the whisk doesn’t break nearly as easily. I really hope to use these for a long, long time!
