Had a getaway to Bangkok over the long weekend! Since my flight landed past midnight, I stayed at an airport hotel for a proper rest, then set off early for my very first foodie stop — Rung Rueang Pork Noodles, a Bib Gourmand eatery in the Michelin Guide. Places like this are perfect when you’re traveling solo.
(Click here to see what Michelin says)
Right across the street from Rung Rueang Pork Noodles is its sibling shop. The story goes that two brothers from the founding family each opened their own place, and most locals say the taste is pretty much the same. I went with the bigger shop which Michelin guide recommends. As I was dining alone, I got seated at a shared table with two other guests. The place is not too cramped despite being busy.
My pick was clear soup with crispy fish skin. The broth was light and bouncy, and the rice noodles (sen lek) had just the right amount of bite. If you like heat, sprinkle on some chili powder. The pork offal was a bit tougher than I’d like, and the fried fish skin was skippable to me— I’d rather save room for the other kind of broth next time.
There might be lines, but the wait isn’t bad. Definitely a great spot if you want to dive into Bangkok’s street food culture!
I didn’t expect to return to Bangkok just two months later, and since my hotel happened to be near Rung Rueang Pork Noodles, I couldn’t stop thinking about the tom yum noodles I missed last time. So I set aside a morning to come here for breakfast.
My travel partner ordered the clear soup with sen-lek. I chose the tom yum soup with egg noodles, level of spiciness is mild. The egg noodles were super thin and slightly firm—something I’ve never had before. (The noodles did arrive a bit clumped together, so you need to loosen them yourself.)
I think I’ve accidentally fallen in love with this kind of Thai noodles—light enough that you won’t feel overly full, with a flavor and texture that fits me perfectly!
🌟 If it’s your first time and not sure what to order, my personal recommendation is:
Tom yum soup + your preferred type of noodle, with pork as the only topping.
